Department of Africana Studies

Department Chair
The Department of Africana Studies seeks a scholar in Africana studies for an endowed Hesburgh Chair who will also serve as the chair of the department beginning fall 2021. Applications are welcome from candidates in any field of the humanities, social sciences, or fine arts. The successful candidate will work with the dean of the College of Arts and Letters and lead the department in faculty hiring as well as curriculum and program development. The chair will teach existing courses, but will also have opportunities to design new and innovative seminars for advanced undergraduate majors. The College of Arts and Letters is working with the department in the development of a center for the comparative study of race to begin in spring 2021. Full or Associate Professor, Historian of Slavery
The Department of Africana Studies announces a search for a historian of slavery in the Western Hemisphere. The position will be either at the full or associate professor level with the tenure home in Africana Studies and a joint appointment in Notre Dame’s new center for the comparative study of race that will be launched later this year. The department is especially interested in scholars who use a comparative and transnational approach to engage issues of movement of enslaved Africans and their descendants, the intersection of race and gender, resistance movements, religion and ritual, political and communal organization, cultural formation, and the complex relationship between slavery and freedom in North America, the Caribbean, and Latin America. In addition to being well-grounded in historical methodology, the department expects candidates to have a deep investment in interdisciplinary discussions and collaboration. The Department of English seeks a tenure-track fiction writer at the assistant professor level for a joint appointment in Notre Dame's new center for the comparative study of race that will be launched later this year and the long-established Creative Writing Program in the Department of English. The department seeks a writer with an M.F.A., Ph.D., or equivalent degree and teaching experience who has published at least one book with a nationally recognized press and who has expertise in Black (including African American, African, and African diasporic) fiction.
